Kwila (which is also known as Merbau) is an extremely durable hardwood. It is termite resistant and perfect for outdoor use.

It is used in a number of outdoor applications such as decking and furniture as it has immense capabilities to resist wood rot and shrinking when exposed to the elements.

This product is produced from timber dried in kilns under close supervision ensuring that the wood reached consistent moisture content, which reduces internal stresses in the timber. This process helps to eliminate many of the problems associated with wooden garden furniture, such as warping and twisting.

Product comes flat packed in a carton quantity of one and required “bleeding” (see below) OR
your Kwila furniture can be “bled” (see below), assembled and oiled so it is ready for use.
This is a service that can be added at a nominal charge. 

Caring for your Timber Furniture

Out of the Box:

Step 1. Dust & Check
When you first unpack your new furniture, remove any residual dust from manufacturing by lightly wiping your furniture with a damp cloth before use. Use this time to look over your furniture and appreciate the natural tone variation and richness of the timber you have purchased. Avoid contact with clothes and cushions at this point if you are working with Kwila timber, as it will “bleed” when wet until step 2 is complete.

Step 2. Bleed it (Kwila (Merbau) timber only
Kwila’s natural oil will cause the furniture to “bleed” an excess dark red/brown sap when first exposed to water: be it a spill, condensation from cold drinks, rain or heavy dew. This sap needs to be “bled” out so that you don’t need to worry about your Kwila furniture staining other materials. The bleeding process we recommend for your Kwila furniture is as follows:

• Place the items to be bled on a grassed area (it is just as important to wet the underside to ensure proper bleeding).
• Hose the items so that they are wet and keep them wet for approx. 1hr (or wait for a day of heavy down pour). You will notice a light brown/red colour in the water runoff.
• As the furniture is drying, beads of water will form on the edges of the furniture. If they have a brownish appearance, repeat the above process. As the nature of each piece of timber is different, the bleeding period is unpredictable in length.
• When the beads of water are clear, allow furniture to dry thoroughly then apply a coat of oil if you are wanting to maintain the rich brown colour of the wood.
• After bleeding is complete, the natural oils remaining in the wood act as a preservative to protect the timber from splitting or cracking.

Once this process is complete you may still get some residual bleeding over time. The above process certainly reduces the chance of this happening significantly.

Step 3. Preserve It
After bleeding and ongoing use, we recommend that your Kwila furniture is oiled when required.  To do this you can apply the oil with a lint-free cloth, so there is a visible residue. After about 20mins wipe the residue away to remove the excess and ensure an even finish. If this process is performed in direct sunlight then the drying time should be approx. 10mins, with application in the shade taking longer to dry.
